85 Candles for a Special Birthday!

Hello bloggie friends.  I wanted to share the birthday card I made for Mom's 85th birthday.
As some of you may already know, we were going to go to Portugal as a surprise visit for her birthday.  Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 we had to cancel our flights the day before departure. And every time I think of this, I get angry at the travel agent we booked through, as we last all our money.  Yes, the flights were still going when we cancelled, but the flights coming back not so much.  We would have ended up in quarantine in Portugal for at least 7 to 8 weeks since they cancelled all flights.  But that is another story ...

Now for my card.  I wanted something different, so this is what I came up with.  It was supposed to have been a lot of fun watching her open her card at her birthday dinner.  But to make things worse, when I cancelled our flights, I put her card and gifts in a package and sent it to her by mail.  This was on March 17th.  She hasn't received it yet, and I'm loosing hope that it will ever get there.  I've been waiting to publish this post to see if it would arrive, but so far nothing.  So I thought I would put it on here - at least she can take a good look at it.  Also the reason there are so many pics.

This card was done using Silhouette design number 116100 by Marji Roy.
The card stock is all from The Paper Studio. The white card stock with pearlised polka dots is from an old wedding paper stack. Unfortunately, I don't have the front cover, so I have no information on it.
Pearl swirls are from my stash. The butterflies were cut using the Vivienne Butterfly die from Memory Box.

As you can imagine, it took me a while to put this card together. Each candle and two part flame were all adhered one by one using Lineco Neutral pH adhesive.

When opened, the card measures a total of just a little over 93 inches.
It does have 85 candles 😀  I know my mom would have had so much fun with it.
You never know, the package may still get there with the card and gifts.  I can hope, right?

Here is a closer look at the candles. Each section has 11 candles. An odd number, but it works.
Although it is a bit tedious adhering all those bits and pieces of the flames, I had fun because I was making it for my mom and I knew it was going to get a good laugh from everyone.

Here is a closer look at the last sections. I also added the Kayla Butterfly by Cottage Cutz as it was smaller and fit in that smaller space perfectly.

On the very last section, I used one of the Pinpoint Scalloped Circles by Spellbinders to write my message.  I put a tiny pearl on each pinpoint.

The card is about 5" x 8" and about 3/4" thick when folded.
Since I was going to hand deliver it, postage was not going to be a problem.
It fits snugly into an A9 envelope (5 5/8" x 8 3/4")

Well, crafting friends, that is it from me for now. I hope you enjoyed your visit and liked my mom's card as much as I know she would have enjoyed it.

If the package ever gets there, I will come back and edit this post to let you all know.

Coming back ...
My mom got her package today - 29 July 2020
It must have been taken by carrier pigeon, who had to self quarantine for 14 days,
every time it flew across a state line or a country border. 😀😀

Have a wonderful weekend, and stay safe and healthy.

  1. This is a WOW card for sure! I hope it eventually makes it to your mom. Sounds like your planned trip was just one disappointment after another, first being cancelled and then losing your money, and then the delayed mail. You put a lot of time and love into this card and it is amazing! I love it, and I know your mom will too, whenever it arrives.
